On July 19, 2022, Daily Harvest announced tara flour as the ingredient causing more than 470 illnesses which were reported to the company. Tara flour is a product derived from the seed pods of tara trees, which are found in Peru.
One June 23, 2022, the FDA reported that Daily Harvest voluntarily recalled all French Lentil + Leek Crumbles after customers reported gastrointestinal infections resulting in poor liver function. Of those ill, many have been faced with the removal of their gallbladders.
The public health department investigation has conducted surveys including the foods eaten prior to illness. Many of those sickened report eating Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. Symptoms of those ill include severe bouts of vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, whole-body itching, dizziness, fever, dark urine, nausea and headache.
Many of those sickened have turned to various social media platforms to report their illnesses and warn others. Their accounts are descriptive of a myriad of symptoms, ER visits and hospital stays resulting in high medical bills and potentially long term problems.
Daily Harvest posted a recall statement on its website which stated that it had, “launched an investigation with internal and external experts throughout our supply chain and in accordance with regulatory procedures.”
NBC News viewed an email sent to a customer asking them to throw away the lentils, “out of an abundance of caution” and offered a $10 credit for every bag of product that had been purchased.
Approximately 28,000 units of recalled product was distributed to customers between April 28 and June 17, 2022. This product was sent through on line sales, direct delivery to homes as well as through retail sales at a “pop-up” store in Los Angeles and at the Daily Harvest store in Chicago, IL..
In response to Consumer Adverse Event Reports (CAERS) and Consumer Complaints submitted to the FDA, the FDA has initiated an investigation, including an inspection and sample collection in an effort to determine the cause of illnesses. As of September 15, 2022, the FDA has received 386 CAERS reports and Consumer Complaints related to this product. FDA’s investigation is ongoing, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
What to do if you become ill and believe you are part of this outbreak
- Protect your heath. Seek prompt medical care.
- DO NOT, as Daily Harvest suggested, “dispose of it.” The product can be tested for pathogens, allergens and chemicals.
