On May 9, 2013, Krinos Foods announced that it was recalling its TAHINI sesame paste for potential Salmonella contamination. The recall was an expansion of a recall issued on April 29, 2013.
On May 22, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the company's products were the source of a Salmonella outbreak among 8 residents of 6 states: California (1), Minnesota (2), New York (1), North Dakota (1), Texas (2), and Wisconsin (1).
According to the CDC, two serotypes, or strains, of Salmonella were identified in the TAHINI sesame paste. Salmonella Mbandaka and Salmonella Montevideo were the two serotypes; two people were infected with Salmonella Montevideo and six were infected with Salmonella Mbandaka after eating the product.
Illnesses occurred in March and April, 2013.
