Kentucky Salmonella outbreak linked to Ramsey’s Diners and Missy’s Pies

Marler Clark is representing one of the victims in this outbreak.

According to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department, ten confirmed cases of Salmonella have been investigated and Missy’s Pies are the common denominator. Of these cases, four have occurred in Fayette County, two in Jessamine County, two in Mercer County and one in Fleming County. There has also been one out of state resident identified as part of this outbreak.

“It was discovered that each case had eaten at least one meal at different Ramsey’s Diner locations between June 17-20. While the entrée items differed, each case consumed a custard-based pie topped with meringue or a cheesecake dessert,” the health department reported to the Lexington Herald -Leader.

The health department collected samples of pies and eggs from Missy’s Pies and Ramsey’s Diner locations for testing. Missy’s Pies was closed to address a thorough cleaning of the kitchen and all equipment. Once this was done, the health department allowed Missy’s to reopen to prepare pies without any ingredients using eggs as filling.

In a statement by the health department, the Leader-Herald reported, “At this time there has been no positive identification of an implicated source for the Salmonella exposure; however, eggs are a raw agricultural commodity and, as such, have the potential to be contaminated. Therefore it is important to observe proper storage, handling and cooking temperatures.”

Symptoms of Salmonella can occur six hours to six days after exposure, but usually occur in six to forty-eight hours. These symptoms can last up to a week but often resolve within a few days.
