Sprouters Northwest Salmonella Typhimurium Outbreak

Sprouters Northwest, a Kent, WA company, recalled alfalfa sprout product and stopped further distribution after a Salmonella outbreak traced to sprouts grown by the company in September of 2008. Health authorities linked an outbreak of 13 illnesses - 9 in Washington State and 4 in Oregon - to the company's product.

Washington State Health authorities said people had been sickened in Clark, Island, King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, and Whatcom counties. At lease two required hospitalization.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sprouts are the number 2 culprit in produce related outbreaks, second only to leafy greens. People are not always aware of eating sprouts, as they are often added to salads or sandwiches.
