Multiple health departments including the Kane County Health Department and the Illinois Public Health Laboratories reported at least 15 Salmonella Typhimurium infections associated with food--most likely salad--served at a Portillo's restaurant in St. Charles, Minnesota in April of 2011. The onset of the first illness was April 5 and onset of the last illness was April 30. Three of the case patients became so ill they were hospitalized. Two Portillo's employees tested positive for Salmonella Typhimurium, but investigators identified them as likely victims of the outbreak, not the source.
Salmonella symptoms typically include fever, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and appear 12-72 after consumption of contaminated food. If you or someone you know has experienced these symptoms, consult a medical professional.
