Salmonella java outbreak - Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska

The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) continues to search for the source of a Salmonella outbreak among Mustang Public School students and other Oklahoma residents who became ill with salmonellosis in September 2010.

As of Oct. 1, 15 Oklahoma residents had been identified as part of the outbreak, including 12 students from 4 Mustang Elementary Schools located in Canadian County, 2 adults from Oklahoma County, and 1 adult from Carter County. All cases had an onset of illness between September 2 and 13, and were confirmed with Salmonella serotype Java infections through laboratory testing.

Public health officials in Iowa and Nebraska are investigating cases that may be linked to the Oklahoma outbreak. A particular food has not been identified as the source of the outbreak.
