Quizno’s Salmonella Outbreak

In October of 2007, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Public Health Laboratory isolated Salmonella Typhimurium from stool samples submitted by several patients suffering from a diarrheal illness. MDH began investigating the cases, and learned that all had eaten at the Rochester, Minnesota Quiznos restaurant in the days before becoming ill with Salmonella infections.

MDH and Olmsted County Public Health Services (OCPHS) conducted a joint investigation into the outbreak, and identified 18 confirmed Salmonella cases, and 23 cases overall that were connected to the consumption of food from the Quiznos restaurant. Investigators concluded that the source of the Quiznos Salmonella outbreak was tomatoes that were most likely already contaminated before they entered the restaurant.
