On October 4, the FSIS announced a recall of approximately 6,500,966 pounds of raw, non-intact beef products produced by BS Tolleson, Inc. and packaged by JBS Tolleson Inc. The products may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport.
To date, 333 people have been sickened across 28 states, with onset dates ranging from August 5-October 16. The numbers by state are: Arizona 50, California 107, Colorado 58, Connecticut 1, Hawaii 4, Idaho 3, Iowa 2, Illinois 1, Indiana 1, Kansas 1, Kentucky 1, Michigan 1, Massachusetts 1, Minnesota 2, Mississippi 1, Missouri 3, Montana 8, New, Mexico 11, Nevada 13, Ohio 9, Oklahoma 6, Oregon 1, South Dakota 9, Texas 19, Utah 11, Washington 3, West Virginia 1, and Wyoming 5.
The raw, non-intact beef items, including ground beef, were packaged on various dates from July 26, 2018 to Sept. 7, 2018.
Symptoms of Salmonella include:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever of 100-102 F
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Body aches
Symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after eating contaminated food and last for 3-7 days without treatment. If you or a family member experienced symptoms, contact your local health department.
