On July 17, the CDC announced a recall of Hy-Vee Inc. Spring Pasta Salad for possible Salmonella contamination. To date, there are 79 reported cases across Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Tennessee. 18 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. The pasta salad includes shell pasta, carrots, celery, cucumbers, green pepper, onion, and mayonnaise. The recalled product was sold in 1-pound (16 oz.) and 3-pound (48 oz.) containers with expiration dates from June 22-August 3 and may have been scooped at deli counters.
The salad was sold in Hy-Vee grocery stores in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The CDC is recommending that consumers return the recalled Spring Pasta Salad to the store for a refund or throw it away.
Symptoms of Salmonella include:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever of 100-102 F
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Body aches
Symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after eating contaminated food and last for 3-7 days without treatment. If you or a family member experienced symptoms, contact your local health department.
