In October 2011, Wegman's Food Markets recalled 5,000 pounds of Turksih pine nuts when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that imported Turkish pine nuts sold in the grocery chain's bulk bins were the source of a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak. The pine nuts were imported by American Pistachio Commodity Corp. which does business as New Jersey-based "Sunrise Commodities"
By November 4, the CDC had confirmed that at least 42 people had become ill and two had to be hospitalized as a result of the outbreak. Illnesses were reporter in the following states: New York (27), Pennsylvania (8), Virginia (4) and New Jersey (2), and Maryland (1).

On November 10, 2011 Marler Clark filed a lawsuit against American Pistachio d.b.a. Sunshine Commodities on behalf a college student in Rochester, NY who was hospitalized when he contracted a Salmonella infection after eating contaminated pine nuts. On November 15, a second lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Rochester, NY-area woman and her teen daughter who both became ill with Salmonella after eating Turkish pine nuts. One November 28, the firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of a mother and her six year old daughter. On December 19, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Webster mother and her daughter.
