According to the health department, at least 12 people fell ill with E. coli infections after visiting The Porch at Schenley in Oakland. At least 8 of the E. coli outbreak victims were hospitalized, but none developed hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Most of the E. coli outbreak victims reported eating hamburgers at The Porch, and lab tests for E. coli detected bacteria on some samples of ground beef patties taken from the restaurant. Health Department officials were unable to determine whether E. coli bacteria entered the restaurant on meat or in another way.
