The company, which uses unpasteurized raw milk for its products, has issued a recall of all raw milk cheeses including those that were made from sheep, cows, and goats. Raw milk does not go through the pasteurization process to kill pathogenic bacteria. Prior E. coli O157 outbreaks have been traced to raw milk and cheese made with raw milk.
No information is currently available on the status of the victims, or if any have developed the potentially life-threatening complication of E. coli infection, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Anyone who purchased or consumed Sally Jackson Cheese and is experiencing symptoms of an E. coli infection including abdominal cramping and bloody diarrhea is encouraged to visit their health care practitioner to be tested for E. coli.
