Hepatitis A Cases Up to 540

Ten new hepatitis A cases confirmed in Chi-Chi's outbreak

Nov 20, 2003

KDKA and the Associated Press

Pittsburgh -- For the third day in a row, the number of Hepatitis A cases linked to the Chi-Chi's in the Beaver Valley Mall has risen by ten new cases.

State health officials say the number of those affected by the outbreak is now up to 540.

Pennsylvania Health Department officials say they have no new information to release today on their efforts to determine a cause for the outbreak.

Though the cause of the outbreak is still under investigation, experts believe tainted green onions may be to blame.

Scallions have already been linked to similar outbreaks in North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

Now the Food & Drug Administration has banned imports of green onions from Mexico.

The onions are being stopped at the border.
