**FAQ**

**What is norovirus?**

Norovirus is the most common cause of foodborne illness in the United States, responsible for roughly half of all outbreaks and about 20 million illnesses a year. It is extremely contagious and spreads rapidly from an infected food handler, causing sudden vomiting and diarrhea that usually last one to three days.

**How does norovirus spread through food?**

An infected food handler can contaminate food or surfaces, and it takes only a few viral particles to make someone sick. Ready-to-eat foods such as salads, sandwiches, and shellfish are common vehicles.

**How long does norovirus last?**

Symptoms usually begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last one to three days. People can remain contagious for days after they feel better.

**Can a restaurant be liable for a norovirus outbreak?**

Yes. When a sick employee who should have been kept out of the kitchen causes an outbreak, the restaurant may be liable for the resulting illnesses.

**What evidence helps a norovirus claim?**

A health-department investigation linking illnesses to a specific meal or establishment, together with your own medical records and receipts, is often key.
