South Dakota has identified five cases of salmonella that are part of a multi-state outbreak possibly linked to eating alfalfa, onion and gourmet sprouts.
SunSprout Enterprises Inc. of Omaha has pulled those products as a precautionary measure. Laboratory tests have yet to confirm sprouts as the source.
Other cases have been reported in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.
People with recalled sprouts should throw them away. Anyone who is ill and may have eaten the sprouts should see a doctor.
Salmonella may cause diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Most people recover without treatment but severe infections may occur, especially in infants, elderly or those with impaired immune systems, the health department said.
