Marler Clark is proud to again donate to the Campaign for Equal Justice . The attorneys at Marler Clark urge all law firms in Washington state to do the same.
Last year, the Campaign for Equal Justice funded civil legal aid for 36,000 families in poverty. Thanks to donations from individuals, law firms and local companies, they raised $1.8 million to support non-profit providers of civil legal aid.
Legal aid is a lifeline in a time of crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a rise in legal needs for families in poverty. For urgent issues of unemployment, domestic violence, and eviction, legal aid attorneys are part of the first line response in the current crisis and will be key to recovery efforts. Legal aid helps families access critical safety net benefits, fight an eviction or foreclosure, secure a domestic violence protection order, help immigrants gain asylum, and fight workplace discrimination to provide security and path out of poverty.
Common civil legal needs
- Family Safety (domestic violence, immigration, asylum)
- Healthcare (debt, access to care)
- Housing & Employment (foreclosure, eviction, discrimination)
- Consumer, Financial Services & Fraud Issues
- Access to Assistance (veterans, social security, disability)
Legal aid is a powerful tool to break cycles of poverty
Unlike criminal cases, the Constitution does not guarantee legal assistance in civil cases. Without help, too many low-income people are left to navigate complex legal issues alone, and as a result, lose their homes or livelihoods. When poor families cannot access legal help, the wealthy people have the courtroom advantage and justice is not accessible to all.
