Kosher Chicken Salmonella Outbreak


On August 29, the CDC announced an outbreak of Salmonella I 4, [5],12:i:- linked to Kosher chicken. To date, there are a total of 17 people sick across four states (Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia). 8 people have been hospitalized, including one death in New York. 

In interviews, people reported eating Empire Kosher brand chicken. Two chicken facilities tested positive for the outbreak strain, including one that processes Empire Kosher brand chicken. The investigation is ongoing.

Symptoms of salmonella include:

·       Diarrhea

·       Abdominal cramps

·       Fever of 100-102 F

·       Bloody diarrhea

·       Vomiting

·       Headache

·       Body aches

Symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after eating contaminated food and last for 3-7 days without treatment. If you or a family member experienced symptoms, contact your local health department.
