--- title: Egg Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 98 in 17 States date: 2026-07-24T17:29:00-07:00 author: Bill Marler canonical_url: "https://marlerclark.com/egg-salmonella-outbreak-sickens-98-in-17-states" section: Litigation Landing Pages --- [Foodborne Illnesses](/foodborne-illnesses) / [Salmonella](https://marlerclark.com/foodborne-illnesses/salmonella) / # Egg Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 98 in 17 States The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of *Salmonella* Enteritidis infections linked, in part, to shell eggs [recalled](https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/midwest-poultry-services-lp-recalls-shell-eggs-due-possible-salmonella-enteritidis-contamination) by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. Based on epidemiological information collected by CDC, a total of 98 people infected with the outbreak strain of *Salmonella* have been reported from 17 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from November 21, 2025, to June 30, 2026. Forty (91%) of 44 ill persons with information available reported eating eggs before becoming ill. There have been 26 hospitalizations, and no deaths have been reported. Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia. Laboratory, epidemiological, and traceback data from this investigation have determined that shell eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P are a likely source of illnesses in this outbreak. As part of this investigation, FDA conducted a traceback investigation based on where ill people reported purchasing or eating eggs during the timeframe of interest, and Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. was identified as a common egg source; however, this producer does not account for all the illnesses in this outbreak. Additional investigation is ongoing to determine if there are other sources of illness. Additionally, Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. collected samples at farms in Texas. Certain samples collected by the firm tested positive for *Salmonella*, and [whole genome sequencing](https://www.fda.gov/food/microbiology-research-food/whole-genome-sequencing-wgs-program) performed by the firm’s third-party lab revealed that some samples match the strain of *Salmonella* in this outbreak. The firm shared third-party testing results with the FDA on July 21, 2026, and Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. proactively initiated a [recall](https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/midwest-poultry-services-lp-recalls-shell-eggs-due-possible-salmonella-enteritidis-contamination) of white shell eggs and brown cage free shell eggs produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6, 2026 and July 3, 2026 with sell by or best by dates between July 20, 2026 and August 17, 2026. Consumers, restaurants, and retailers that purchased or received recalled eggs should throw them away or return them to their place or purchase for a refund and disinfect any areas that could have come in contact with recalled eggs. [recalled](https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/midwest-poultry-services-lp-recalls-shell-eggs-due-possible-salmonella-enteritidis-contamination) white shell eggs and brown cage free shell eggs produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6, 2026 and July 3, 2026, with sell by or best by dates between July 20, 2026 and August 17, 2026. The recalled eggs will have an identifying code number printed on the left or right sides of the carton in date-coding ink only. Only codes P-1950 or 0840962 with a Julian Date between 157 and 184 printed on the side of the carton are recalled.
